Steel roof joists are light-weight trusses used to support the roof of a building. They consist, in the standard form, of parallel chords and a triangulated web system while existing in a variety of  custom configurations. Additionally, the use of steel joists for roof construction can result in substantial economic savings, which in the case of the Eames, was an important aspect considering the emergence of the American middle class at the time.
